The wooded property at Vanderslice st & Franklin/Gay st is on the chopping block. It’s currently owned by the rail line, but Audubon Land Development Corp is proposing to acquire and build 12 townhomes on the site. We recognize the need for housing, but there are already developed sites that don’t involve clearcutting mature trees where we’d rather see these houses built.
They are seeking a wide array of variances and waivers for things like slope disturbance, tree removal, environmental protection, stormwater management, street width, and more. The plans indicate that approximately 95% of the site’s steep slopes would be impacted.
The trees are a MAJOR concern. The Borough’s arborist has identified 8 large trees as Heritage Trees or likely Heritage Trees that the current plan would remove, including 5 American Sycamores, one of them 59″ in diameter, 3 large Silver Maples, in addition to 4 publicly owned London Planes along Vanderslice.
Neighbors have reported that this site is home to precious wildlife including owls and a possible eagle. There’s still time to save it 🙏
